O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges. However, she experienced significant defeats in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed to the bottom three or the bottom two spots as well as the bottom two. It was a shock to the judges and they suggested that people choose Melissa who was the contestant with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was consistent that he didn't fall in the third place. Judge Werner was confident, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
